First and foremost, can we all agree to never call it chai tea latte? That literally translates to “Tea tea milk”.

Chai Latte, or Masala Chai, is a traditional Indian drink that got popularized worldwide. It’s a delicious hot drink consisting of black tea and spices, topped with hot milk.

It isn’t just normal milk tea – the strong black tea with the milk warms every part of your core and the various spices tingles all your tastebuds. It reminds you of all the seasons, and all the festivities in every sip.

It’s surely one of my favorite drinks of all time and, in my opinion, perfect for any time, any day, and any season!

Ingredients:

For the chai:

  • 4 cups water

  • 2 teabags of black tea or 2-4 tsp of black tea leaves

  • 1 tsp cardamom

  • 1 tsp ground ginger

  • 1 tsp nutmeg

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • 1 tsp cloves

  • 2-3 pieces star anise

  • Optional: black peppercorns

For chai latte:

  • ½ - 1 cup of chai

  • ¾ whole milk (or any milk of your choice)

Directions:

  1. Add all the spices in a pot of boiling water and turn the heat off when it reaches a boil.

  2. Allow to steep for 5 minutes.

  3. After the spices steep, add black tea and bring to a boil again.

  4. Add sweetener of your choice.

  5. Once it reaches a boil, close the heat off and leave it to steep for 10 minutes.

  6. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.

    Making the chai latte:

  7. Recommendation: For every ½ cup of chai, add ¾ cup of milk

  8. Froth the milk.

  9. Into a mug, add chai and milk according to the ratio of your choice.

  10. Finish with cinnamon.
